Adolescent Stress Management and Family Education : A Proposed Research


The years of adolescence are characterized by dramatic physical, cognitive, social, and emotional change initiated by the onset of puberty. The changes are associated with transformation in family relationship, peer relationship, and with the emergence and escalation of conflict between adolescent and their peers, and between adolescent and their parents. The changes impact adolescent’s conceptions and feeling about themselves and their relationship with others.


Previous researches stated that parent-adolescent conflicts increase during the middle of school years and involves the everyday activities in family. The other researches also stated that adolescent are strongly influenced by peers. These two environments are great stressors for adolescent. As the consequence, adolescent have to improve their stress management skills. Family and peers environment can be a stressor situation and also a chance for adolescent to learn stress management skills. The author believes that family environment has more impact on adolescent.


In other side, developmental tasks are common pattern to find ideal condition of human life in stages. The tasks have a role as guidance about what are supposed to do to conform in the society. In other words, developmental tasks can be a comparing standard to evaluate adolescent quality of psychological life.


This research will examine the pattern stress management skills of adolescent and their family education background. Specifically, this research will explore characteristic of adolescent family education background that build the adolescent stress management skills. As a comparing, this research will find the correlation between those two aspects with finishing developmental tasks in adolescence.


This research will be done as quantitative-qualitative study that examines adolescent stress management skills from some several family backgrounds. There will be some tools to collect the data such as structured interview, structured observation, measurement scales, and standardized inventory. This research will use multi-methods to analyze the data.
The author hopes this research will give a great contribution on to discipline of educational psychology in terms of importance family education aspect in adolescent maturity. The author also hopes that this research can be held in Indonesia because of the relevant improving researches and discourses about education in this country.


The author has explored the concept of stress management skills through some researches at graduate school. This research will be an opportunity to improve expertise in this topic. The author’s profession as a school counselor supports to explore the dynamic of education process, especially adolescent. The author realized that education system in Indonesia is left behind the other countries. It makes Indonesia has low quality of human resources that gives the impact to slow down the progress in Indonesia development. The research really concern of the education in Indonesia, hopefully this effort is a significance to be applied in Indonesia.
